How to create habits for sustainable living: 12 proven techniques
In this whiteboard animation, I suggest 12 tips to create good habits for sustainable living using proven techniques from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear.
As I was reading the book, I kept thinking how it could applied to sustainability habits for people who want to be part of the solution and create the right habits to have a positive sustainable impact every day. The premise of the book is that “tiny changes can produce remarkable results”. If you get just 1% better at having a more sustainable or eco-friendly lifestyle every day, you are getting 37 times better after one year ! If you get 1% worse everyday, you end up close to zero.
In the book, James Clear presents 4 laws of behavioural change that I found very helpful:
- Make it obvious
- Make it attractive
- Make it easy
- Make it immediately satisfying.
For this video, I tried to adapt these laws as well as several other techniques to create good habits (and break bad ones) with regard to sustainable living. Instead of listing dozens of things we should do every day, in this video we, look at simple techniques we can use to build the habits that we want and we apply them to concrete examples such as eating less meat, using fewer disposable containers, driving less, shopping better, etc.
